Norman, OK — The Red River Rivalry has delivered its share of classics over the decades, but this year’s edition came with a twist: ninth-ranked Oklahoma dismantled the top-ranked Texas Longhorns, 34-18, in front of a roaring Cotton Bowl crowd.
This wasn’t just a win — it was a declaration. Coach Lovie Mahawg’s Sooners dominated the line of scrimmage, won the turnover battle, and smothered a Texas team that came in averaging nearly 50 points per game.
“They thought they were gonna run us out of the stadium. We turned the lights out on ’em instead,” Mahawg said after the game, his trademark smirk showing just beneath the visor.

Mateer’s Efficiency, Bowen’s Brilliance
Quarterback John Mateer ran the offense like a maestro, completing 27 of 36 passes for 222 yards with no interceptions. His longest connection was a crisp 25-yard strike, but the Sooners leaned on short, controlled passes to keep the clock moving.
The game’s unquestioned MVP was SS Peyton Bowen, who put together one of the greatest defensive performances in program history: 7 tackles, 3 interceptions, and a 66-yard pick-six that blew the game wide open.
Mahawg didn’t hold back in his praise:
“Bowen played like his hair was on fire. Three picks? One to the house? That’s the kind of football I’ll lose my voice yelling for.”
Ground Game by Committee
With starting HB Jayden Ott exiting early due to a chest injury, the Sooners turned to their deep stable of backs. Taylor Tatum led the charge with a highlight-reel 48-yard breakaway, finishing with 51 yards on 5 carries. Jovantae Barnes added 40 yards, while Xavier Robinson punched in a short-yardage touchdown.
Mahawg had a pointed message when asked about Ott’s availability moving forward:
“The boy needs to man up. Football ain’t a pillow fight. We’ll see if he’s ready to strap it up next week.”
Texas Neutralized
OU’s defense held Texas to just 196 passing yards and 52 rushing yards — a staggering feat against the nation’s top offense. The Sooners were physical, disciplined, and opportunistic, forcing 4 interceptions while limiting explosive plays.
Edge rusher R. Mason Thomas notched 1.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss, while Kendal Daniels chipped in a key interception. Texas managed just 18 points, including a meaningless late score.
Looking Ahead
The Sooners improved to 6-0 and have all the momentum heading into next week’s road trip to Coastal Carolina.
Mahawg, true to form, summed up his team’s mentality going forward:
“Enjoy it tonight, forget it tomorrow. We’re not chasing rankings — we’re hunting wins.”
If Saturday was any indication, Oklahoma isn’t just in the playoff hunt — they might be the team no one wants to face in December.
