Sooners Dropped to #2 Ahead of Big 12 Title Game — Coach Mahawg Fires Back

The College Football Playoff committee has shaken things up — and Sooner Nation is in disbelief. Despite a perfect 12–0 record and a 34–18 win over Texas eight weeks ago, the Oklahoma Sooners slid to the #2 seed in the playoff rankings, with rival Texas leapfrogging to the #1 spot.

A photorealistic image of Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lovie Mahawg at a press conference. He is wearing a crimson OU pullover and visor, with his trademark cigar in hand. Behind him, a press backdrop features team and sponsor logos, and he appears confident as he addresses reporters.

This twist sets the stage for an epic Big 12 Championship showdown in Week 16, where the Sooners and Longhorns will meet again — this time with even more on the line.

Coach Lovie Mahawg didn’t hide his frustration but made it clear that his team’s focus hasn’t wavered:

  • “We don’t play for rankings; we play for rings. But I’ll be honest, it’s tough to swallow when you’re perfect and someone you beat is ranked above you.”
  • “The committee can do what they want — they don’t play the games. Our job is to keep proving we’re the best team in the country, every snap.”
  • “Texas is a great team, but we’ve been dominant from Week 1. Nothing changes for us. We’re still the hunted.”
  • “If they think moving us to #2 is going to rattle us, they don’t know this locker room. We’ll take it personal — and that’s dangerous for whoever lines up across from us.”
  • “Big 12 title, playoff berth, bragging rights — it’s all on the table next weekend. I promise you, our boys are ready for war.”

Texas has jumped to the #1 seed at 11–1, while Oklahoma has fallen to the #2 seed despite a 12–0 record and a head-to-head win over Texas earlier in the season. The first-round matchups are: #12 Ole Miss (10–2) vs. #5 Miami (11–1), #9 Oregon (10–2) vs. #8 Penn State (11–1), #11 USC (11–1) vs. #6 LSU (12–0), and #10 Michigan (12–0) vs. #7 Georgia (10–2). The winners advance to face #4 Texas Tech (11–1), #1 Texas, #3 Clemson (11–1), or #2 Oklahoma in the quarterfinals. The graphic notes that the championship game will be held in Miami, Florida at Hard Rock Stadium, with the national championship trophy displayed on the right side.

The Sooners now have the perfect opportunity to silence any doubt. A statement win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game could not only secure their playoff position but also remind the nation why championship football runs through Norman.
