Sooners Silence Oxford: #2 Oklahoma Dominates #9 Ole Miss, 28–3

The Grove was buzzing, and Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was a sea of white as Ole Miss fans leaned into their “Antebellum” pageantry. But when the smoke cleared, it was Oklahoma’s all-white uniforms that told the story. The #2 Sooners walked into Oxford and methodically dismantled the #9 Rebels, 28–3, reminding the nation that this program is built for big moments, anywhere, anytime.

Controlling the Game

Sophomore quarterback Jake Wakefield was efficient and commanding, completing 21 of 26 passes for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns, with just one interception. His chemistry with his receivers was sharp, as he connected on crucial throws in tight coverage and kept the offense balanced all night.

The ground game didn’t pop the way it did in Norman a week ago, but it was steady. Xavier Robinson fought for 30 hard-earned yards on 10 carries, while Taylor Tatum punched in a short touchdown run that extended OU’s lead before halftime. Isaac Brown added 39 yards on 6 carries, giving OU just enough balance to keep Ole Miss honest.

In the air, Wakefield spread the ball around, but the standouts were clear: Isaiah Sategna hauled in two touchdown receptions (23 yards and 10 yards), while Robinson added a receiving score of his own. Elijah Thomas was steady with 5 catches, while Talyn Shettron and Jose Robledo chipped in timely grabs.

Coach Lovie Mahawg, wearing a crimson Oklahoma visor and white pullover, celebrates a road victory with both fists raised. His signature cigar rests in his mouth as he smiles, with a packed stadium and players in white uniforms blurred in the background.

Defensive Wall

Oklahoma’s defense smothered Ole Miss, holding them to 233 total yards and just a single field goal. The Sooners racked up 5 sacks and dominated the trenches, led by David Stone and Adepoju Adebawore, who each finished with 1.5 sacks. Linebacker Taurean York made his presence known with an interception and multiple tackles for loss, while Brian Nelson II locked down his side of the field with 5 stops.

The Rebels never found rhythm. By the fourth quarter, Ole Miss fans were streaming toward the exits, and the all-white crowd was quieter than a church on Monday morning.

Coach Mahawg Speaks

Coach Lovie Mahawg walked into his postgame presser with his trademark Perdomo cigar clenched in his teeth and fire in his eyes. Here’s the best of what he had to say:

  • On walking into Oxford:
“They dressed it up real pretty in white, but pretty don’t win football games. We came to hit, and we hit for four quarters.”
  • On Jake Wakefield’s leadership:
“That kid played like a veteran tonight. Eighty percent completions on the road in the SEC? That’s guts, that’s poise, and that’s what I expect.”
  • On the defense’s dominance:
“Three points. That’s all we gave ‘em. You hold an SEC team to three in their house, that ain’t luck — that’s culture.”
  • On the offensive line’s battle:
“We didn’t run for a hundred miles tonight, but we leaned on ‘em. By the fourth quarter, those boys in blue were gettin’ up slow.”
  • On the bigger picture:
“This is just stop number two on a long road. We’re not here to celebrate in October. We’re here to finish in January. And I’ll tell you this — we’re gonna Make OU Great Again, one Saturday at a time.”

Final Word

Ole Miss brought the crowd, but Oklahoma brought the hammer. Behind Wakefield’s precision, a stifling defense, and Mahawg’s unrelenting edge, the Sooners left Oxford with a statement win.

Boomer Sooner — and on to the next one.
