Norman, OK – Norman was electric Saturday night as the #1 Oklahoma Sooners extended their unbeaten streak to 5–0 with a resounding 59–13 victory over the Colorado State Rams. Under the lights of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, the Sooners delivered another statement performance—one fueled by precision, pain, and plenty of swagger.
But it wasn’t all celebration. The night also brought a wave of injuries that left Coach Lovie Mahawg with more questions than cigars by the time the final whistle blew.

Wakefield’s Redemption
After last week’s rainy benching in Tulsa, all eyes were on Jake Wakefield, and the sophomore answered in emphatic fashion.
Wakefield was laser-sharp, completing 22 of 31 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball across a deep receiver corps that looks scarier by the week.
Sophomore Elijah Thomas was unstoppable—hauling in 10 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, carving up CSU’s secondary underneath and over the middle. Tight end Tramon Wheeler and slot man Isaiah Sategna each added touchdown grabs, while veteran wideout Kaden Helms chipped in another score.
“That kid bounced back like a champ,” Mahawg said of Wakefield. ‘He got humbled in Tulsa, and tonight he played like a man who wanted his job back.’
Ground Game Still Grinding
Even without gaudy numbers, the Sooners’ rushing attack continued to punish opponents. Xavier Robinson and Isaac Brown split carries, combining for 210 yards on 20 attempts, each averaging over 10 yards per rush. Taylor Tatum added two short touchdowns, cementing Oklahoma’s red-zone dominance.
“That’s our three-headed monster,” Mahawg grinned postgame. ‘You got Robinson’s power, Brown’s patience, and Tatum’s burst. It’s like trying to fight a tornado with an umbrella.’
Defense Delivers and Dominates
Defensive coordinator Robert “Rub” Mahawg’s unit put on another clinic. The Sooners racked up 8 sacks and forced three turnovers, suffocating Colorado State after the first quarter.
Freshman tackle Darrell Droogsma was the breakout star with 2.5 sacks, while Jayden Jackson and Brian Nelson II added one apiece.
“Droogsma’s a young bull,” Mahawg said, lighting his Perdomo in the postgame presser. ‘You can’t coach hunger, and that kid’s starving for greatness.’
Meanwhile, safety Peyton Bowen notched another interception, and Michael Boganowski patrolled the secondary with six tackles and a key stop on 4th down.
“That’s Oklahoma defense, baby,” Mahawg barked. ‘You cross that 50-yard line, you better have insurance.’
The Price of Greatness
The only dark cloud over the night came from the injury report, which grew longer as the game went on.
The Sooners lost three key linemen: Siolaa Lolohea (broken collarbone), Michael Fasusi (torn rotator cuff), and Marcus Grimes (dislocated ankle).
“That one hurts,” Mahawg admitted. ‘You can scheme around a lot of things, but you can’t replace heart. Those boys will be back, and we’ll hold the line till they do.’
Still, the Sooners didn’t flinch—finishing the game with two converted tight ends protecting Wakefield in the fourth quarter while the backups sealed the win.
“You know what that shows me?” Mahawg said. ‘This team’s got grit. It’s not about who’s hurt—it’s about who’s next.’
Mahawg’s Message
Even with his team ranked #1 and outscoring opponents by 40 per game, Mahawg was quick to remind fans—and his locker room—that the standard hasn’t changed.
- On the team’s mentality:
“We ain’t satisfied. You don’t hang banners for being 5–0.” - On adversity:
“This game’ll test your bones, your will, and your soul. Tonight, we passed that test.” - On what’s next:
“Texas is up next, and I don’t care if we got five linemen or five farmers—we’re comin’ to fight. We’re gonna make OU great again, one punch at a time.”
The Road Ahead
Next stop: The Red River Showdown in Dallas.
The Sooners roll in unbeaten and unbroken, but with a battered offensive line and a chip the size of the state itself.
Mahawg’s army is 5–0, and as he said with that trademark grin, cigar smoke curling upward:
“We ain’t playin’ football—we’re settin’ standards.”
